It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Alan Wayne Smith, on February 23, 2025 at the age of 72. He departed this earthly home peacefully with his loving family by his side, stepping into the arms of Jesus. Alan was born on August 21, 1952, in Columbus to Eunice Josephine (Olmstead) and Louie Smith.
Alan dedicated his life to service, duty, and love. After high school, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Marine Corps. He faithfully served for 20 years, rising to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) before retiring. Alan was a warrior both in the military and in life, facing every challenge with resilience, including a courageous battle with cancer. In the end, he fought his hardest against Alzheimer’s, a battle that he met with the same strength and determination that defined him.
While serving in the Marines, Alan married the love of his life, Terry Barnes Smith and together they built a life filled with love and devotion. He was a proud and dedicated father to Lesley (Josh) Kestler and Sean (Laureen White) Smith, and his greatest joy came from his growing family. He was blessed with six grandchildren Madison (Jordan Lowe) Barton, Cameron (Hannah Payne) Barton, Nathaniel (Precious Baker) Smith, Cate Smith, Kayla (Colton Sullivan) Kestler, and Paige (Lance Sturgeon) Kestler, and four great-grandchildren Jase and Laiken Lowe, Adalynn Barton, Leighton Bell. Each of whom brought him immense pride and happiness.
Alan was never idle. He was strong-willed, hardworking, and full of grit. His down-to-earth attitude, easy smile, and enormous heart made him a friend to many. Alan believed in giving back to his community.
He believed in standing up for what was right, living with integrity, and leading with courage. Whether facing danger on the battlefield or overcoming life's hardships, Alan's unwavering faith and steadfast spirit never wavered. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather— and a cherished friend. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of strength, service, and love will live on in those who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eunice Josephine (Olmstead) and Louie Smith, his brother Eddie D. Smith.
In keeping with Alan’s wishes, no formal services will be held. The family encourages those who knew and loved him to honor his memory in their own way. In lieu of flowers, they ask that you perform an act of kindness in Alan’s honor, continuing his legacy of generosity and goodwill.
Semper Fi, Alan. Your mission is complete. Rest in peace.
