Game Report: Jets Land Late in Game, Come Up Short in Semi-State

By Mike Asher, HSJ Sports Correspondent

In 49 other states it’s just basketball. In Indiana, it’s called Hoosier Hysteria.

Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium, on the campus of Seymour High School in Seymour, Ind., was once the largest high school gym in the world with a seating capacity of 8,228. It’s now second to New Castle Fieldhouse. At Saturday’s 1A South Semi-State, Jet Nation poured in filling one whole side. Hauser’s Jet Port couldn’t hold this many fans. It was great seeing so many people whom I hadn’t seen at a game in 20 years.

Despite having as many fans as the other three teams combined, 1A #2 Hauser lost the battle against #4 Orleans 69-67. The Jets were hitting on all cylinders, leading most of the game, once by as many as 13 points early in the third quarter. Junior point guard Stryker Gill was dealing the ball to his teammates ending with 10 assists and seven points. Senior Center Collin Buck was the recipient of most of the assists scoring a team high 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Gavin Keller followed in scoring with 17; Taeshaun Tungate had 14, and Ledger Gelfius seven.

The Bulldogs didn’t just have bark; they had bite, as they didn’t go away. They kept inching their way back into the game, several times trading their three-point baskets with Hauser’s two’s. With two minutes remaining in the game, Hauser still had a three-point lead. The Jets held Orleans senior guard Rylan Crocker to four points in the first half and then exploded for 20 in the second half to lead all scorers with 24. Center Alex DeWitt followed up with 20 for the Bulldogs.

A couple controversial calls that didn’t go the Jets halfway through the fourth quarter seemed to change the momentum of the game. What many thought should have been a charging call against Orleans, turned into a blocking call on Hauser. Another was a three-point attempt by Orleans, resulted into a Hauser foul when it looked as if the shooter initiated the contact with a leg kick many times seen in college and profession games. After shooting only 3-11 from the free throw line in the Regional Championship, Hauser was 13-17 Saturday.

Regardless of the calls or outcome, both teams left everything they had on the court. Hauser ends the season with a fantastic record of 24-4.

“This senior class had a historic season restoring the program back to the tradition of excellence from the early 2000’s,” said Coach Trend Morehead.

Not only this season, but the past four seasons, these seniors have worked together and have a long list of achievements.

These memories will last a lifetime for themselves, their families, friends, and communities. Hopefully, this uphill climb will continue. To keep things positive, the last time Hauser lost in the semi-state at Seymour, they won the State Championship the following year. Time for history to repeat itself 20 years later.  GO JETS!!!
