John P. Defler, 70, formerly of the Hope/Hartsville area, passed away on September 8, 2025 at Seymour Crossing Nursing Home after a long illness.
The youngest child of the late Ernest L and Nora M Despain Defler, John was an Army Brat. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on April 4, 1955 where the family was stationed at the time. His father’s Army career took the family to live in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kansas, and Japan. Upon his father's retirement from the US Army, the family resettled in the Hope/Hartsville area to be near relatives. John attended Hauser High School, graduating in 1972.
As an adult, John was the Adult Protective Services Officer for Bartholomew and four surrounding counties for 35 years. He was especially proud of his role in the development of the program during its infancy. He was affectionately known and respected for his concern, compassion, and assistance to the elderly and disabled by Healthcare and Social Services organizations throughout the five counties he covered.
Although John had no biological children, he longed for a loving family. In later life, he was united in marriage to his cherished wife, Brenda Sharp. John formed the instant family he always wanted with Brenda and her four children. He was never happier than during the 25 years he shared with Brenda, her children and grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife, Brenda, Columbus, IN; sister Kathy (George “Bud”) Parks, Las Vegas, NV; niece Diana Parks, Las Vegas, NV; nephew Aaron (Angela) Parks, Harrisonburg, VA; and numerous cousins in surrounding counties.
John’s immediate family extends a special thanks to Denise Jones, John’s stepdaughter, for her kindness and assistance during his long illness.
John has chosen cremation with Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, Columbus, IN.
A memorial service will be held in the future for family and friends.
