Prior to Hauser’s Regional Championship game Saturday, the Jets’ record was 0-2 in Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium. Both games were similar in fashion, as the Jets had decent leads, but their opponents came back to win in the final seconds. Their first appearance was in the 2005 Semi-State championship game against Loogootee, falling 36-35. Last season, Hauser was upset by the eventual 1A State Champions Orleans 69-67.
This year the regional was in Seymour against Mid-Hoosier Conference opponent South Decatur, who Hauser had beaten February 3, 69-40. It’s not always easy to defeat an opponent twice in a season, especially come tournament time. The key for Hauser was to get off to a great start. They didn’t disappoint. The Jets came out hotter than Dave Webster lying on an 80-degree Florida beach during Spring Break!
Hauser led at every stop: first quarter 23-8, halftime 42-19, third quarter 62-38, and cruising to a 74-54 win. The Jets (25- 2) finally picked up their first win in Seymour, as they dominated every aspect of the game, handling any defense the Cougars threw at them.
Senior Gavin Keller led the Jets scoring attack with 26. Rounding out scoring for Hauser; Stryker Gill 19, Kam Blair 13, Bill Miller 7, Braydon McFarland 3, Joel Bechtel 2, Waylon Harper 2, and RJ Foster 2. Gill also had 10 rebounds and 4 assists. (It was great to see RJ back following a stress fracture in his foot.)
The Cougars finished their season 18-7, and were led in scoring by Senior guard Drake Scaggs with 19. Other Cougars in double figures scoring were: Karson Templeton with 12, and Cayden Drake had 11.
Side Notes:
* Three players in the Regional Championship came into the game having scored over 1,000 career points. Hauser’s Keller, Gill, and South Decatur’s Scaggs. Drake finished his career with 1,142 points.
* Both teams brought in plenty of experience, as each roster boasted eight seniors.
* Playing and watching games in a historic gym, which is the second largest high school gym in the United States is amazing. (8,424 seating capacity) Plus hearing friend Curt Nichols on the PA is icing on the cake!
