The Indiana 9/11 flag was created by inmates of the Pendleton Reformatory to honor the victims of the September 11th attacks, symbolizing resilience and remembrance for those affected. This flag serves as a tribute to the 2,977 lives lost and the sacrifices made by first responders and military personnel during and after the attacks.
The Pendleton Reformatory’s 9/11 Flag is a 12’ x 14’ quilt constructed from 3” x 3” squares of fabric. Each square contains the name of every person who died in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. It fosters a sense of community and remembrance among inmates and staff of the reformatory, and the viewing public.
The flag has significant historical and emotional importance and represents unity in the face of tragedy, serving as a reminder of the impact of the events of 9/11. The flag was originally displayed at the Pixy Theatre in Edinburgh, Indiana. It has traveled to local fire departments and American Legion posts during memorial events and was included in the 10th anniversary ceremonies at the 49er’s Stampede in Death Valley, California.
